
Session 6
Short description of the session:
Work on the process of creating an advertisement, and show students several beauty commercials in order to analyze them through driving questions that will guide them to be aware of the purpose behind these advertisements and compare the ads with the historical research on beauty standards they made.
OBJECTIVES:
1. Be aware of the purpose behind these advertisements
2. Develop the habit of critical thinking towards things students are exposed to in daily life.
3. Be able to briefly articulate the ideas and analysis of the commercial.
4. Will be able to integrate the class into their own ad creation.

Purpose: Demonstrate the development of commercials on beauty.
Allotted time: 8-10 minutes
Grouping: 3 students per group
Verification: Ask students to reiterate the main ideas in these commercials played to them.
Task 3: Discuss the ideas expressed through the commercials they saw in class, talk with each other about how these commercials make them feel and why. Listen to the lecture about the commercials have evolved to meet the needs of their audience.
Purpose: Have students understand that commercials can be very subjective and easily affected by the social environment and values the consumers support.
Allotted time: 25 minutes
Grouping: 3 students per group
Verification: (steps to check student understanding)

Assign students with roles of “scribe”, “leader” and “speaker”.

Ask students to fill out a handout as a group based on the discussion with each other (the handout will be about the feelings they got from the commercials they just saw and why; the similarities and differences of these commercials; what commercials they have seen in daily life and how do them affect their understanding of beauty; making connections between the commercials they saw and the historical research they did from session 3, as well as their daily life.).

Each group will have the speaker report their discussion results with the whole class in the end.

Let students comment on other groups’ opinions. And debrief as a class.

Closure:
Provide feedback for students’ presentations and give students some takeaways on beauty & commercials.
